  19. Marianna Papoutsopoulou

Lovely! I am an athenian-greec and I adore Schubert...

  20. poop farter

    Righteous

  21. Miyuki Kawasaki

I remember Martin Landau 's character who killed his mistress in one of Woody Allen movies; he loved Schubert so much. I think there's a kind of truth in it, Schubert 's music is sad, murderous at times, but beautiful nonetheless :)

  22. SuperMagren

  25. Dragana Vuckovic

A little off-topic: does anybody know what painting this is?

  29. Dikembe Mutombo

God damn it, this is insane! What music, what art... I wish I knew German.

  30. Magdalene Jaeckel

I am so happy that I grew up in Ggermany with this music, beore Fischer Dieskau came on the scene. He was the perfect interpretator - a genius!

  31. William inUS

This and Die Schoene Mullerin are reason enough to learn German. Thank you!

The Hurdy-Gurdy Man: 1:07:57 stands out for me

  36. BlueDragonExpress

The one Criticism of Dieskau I have is that once you listen to a performance by him, any other performance seems inadequate, and so you only listen to him.

  37. Gessica Minniti

  38. Ralf Popiecz

Ich liebe diese Kombination Fischer-Dieskau und Moore .

  39. Chemistry Atomistic

I’m a Brazilian with proud to have German ancestry.

  40. Max Pankau

No composer was able to express such profundity and expressiveness with such (seeming) musical simplicity as the great Schubert.

  41. Omar Saba

Stunningly beautiful, haunting songs. Perfect performance. Schubert.. what a genius. Do not listen to this at midnight, it might overpower you, zumal wenn man deutsch versteht..

  46. Suzette Richardson

    Anyone know what he's saying

  47. Suzette Richardson

It's so strange a pic my Friend Fatuma drew that says goodnight fell as I was about to play this. I had a dream I had a conversation about a Masterpiece 11 asked Google and this song popped up so I gave it a listen. I think its beautiful. 💕

Sublime - I so love German classical music, and Schubert is so beguiling (yet has so many immediate luminaries, such is the breadth and depth of German artistic endeavour and accomplishment in this cherished genre!)

  54. Hermann Harlos

This is a near perfect performance by both Gerald Moore and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, not to speak of the masterful musical composition by the immortal Franz Schubert and the compelling lyrics by Wilhelm Müller. To properly understand the meaning of the piece, one should consider the fact that Wilhelm Müller was a member of a mystical sect that was fashionable in some circles of the Austria of Schubert's and Müller's days. Thus, Die Winterreise is not only a romantic but also a mystical poem: A Mystical Journey in Winter. I think and feel that Schubert understood and expressed the mystical nature of Müller's poem, and so did Fischer-Dieskau and Moore. The Leiermann in Song 24 is no other than God: "And he lets it go, whichever way it will. Cranks, his organ never standing still. Strange mysterious old man, shall I come along? Will you play your organ to my song?"

  55. Ei’ríġ Proinsias Dammantaċ Ó Gamhna.

I'm not German but I've studied the language enough to understand this music, and it is literally the most rewarding thing about knowing the language as well as I do. The poetry stands on its own, and the music is great even if you can't understand the words, but together, it's really special. The last couple of lines of every song give me chills.

  56. Populous3 Tutorials

hello im intersted in understanding the way composers worked their lieder: did they search for a poem of their taste, then implement it themselves in their music? how was the process? are there rules for a lied, or was there in schuberts time (form, even text rules, idk) ty!

  57. Dagmar Limp

No one else has interpreted better then Dietrich.....after all he was a Berliner and I went to the Franz Schubert Schule in Neukölln in Berlin in the 50th .

  58. Sebastian Zimic

  61. Jean-Jacques

Thank You viool7 magnifique interprétation de Schubert Die Winterreise D911 par Dietrich Fischer Dieskau

  62. Mark McCarty

I first encountered this recording as a teenager when it had been newly issued. My mind was blown, and it remains blown.

  63. Mark McCarty

What music, in all of music, is more wrenchingly moving that Die Winterreise? And what performances of this sublime masterpiece can match those of Fischer-Dieskau/Moore?

  64. Mark McCarty

In my opinion, the greatest recording in the history of recording.

  65. quark libidinal

  66. Paul Heffron

A sensitive listener can tell when a singer has internalized the text and in this case the pianist breathes with the singer and shows the same kind of understanding. What a feast for the ears is this recording

  67. Ken Mannes

After many years of studying Schubert, I still find this so satisfyingly beautiful

  68. monique gazzo

Schubert me berce comme pour apaiser mon chagrin .Je me réfugie près de sa sublime musique.

  69. Peter Johnson

So I read a book about Schubert and it mentioned these songs. But the sadness and tragedy in the lyrics made me predisposed to assume I would not like them. But this is amazing, beautiful is not sufficient. A happy day is when you find, in an increasingly dark world something of lasting beauty.

  77. Sailor Chris

Wonderful! If I may make one suggestion, a better English translation for Der Lindenbaum would be The lime tree.

How beautiful his voice was at this stage of his career...

  88. Anton Wills-Eve

I have often wondered how fortunate I was to be at a school where they, well our wonderful music master, taught us to sing by taking the hardest of all arias, liede and complete masses - we were a Catholic school run by the Benedictine order - and literally forcing everybody in the school to sing the greatest works in their original languages for a total of 90 minutes every week, for 5 days a week, from May 1950 to July 1960. I still cannot sing, God did not bless me with a voice, but oh did those lessons fill me with love of beautiful music. Our master would throw in concetos as well as a treat, just to let us hear what music really was all about. Of course we also had to learn to read the music and the one thing we were all examined on in every term for ten years was clarity of diction - be it German as here, Italian, French, Latin , Spanish and above all English. They don't teach music like that any more but boy was I lucky to have the experience I did. I have spent a total of 67 years of my 74 year life just adoring playing and listening to the greatest artists of every decade of my existence and a few before. How many of you reading this had the same experience? It was Moore and Fischer-Dieskau who made me think back. Our music lessons included a lot of recordings of them. I still whistle songs from Die Winterreise when I'm saying my prayers at night. Now that really is counting your blessings!

  89. Nicholas Escalona

“If there’s no God on earth, then we ourselves are gods”? This is the song of fools.

  91. John Moonitz

Perfection. This has been my favorite interpretation of this song cycle for more than 20 years now . . . Dieskau owns this piece . . . so much so that I have a difficult time fully enjoying other versions by other baritones . . . and though I do love Brendel . . . Gerald Moore is just at level of his own
