Austrians also felt as Germans until WWII and even now many of them see themselves as Germans. Austria is only a seperate state, because the Habsburg empererors didn't want to lose their influence and Austria also was at this time a state with many nations and cultures, because it was much bigger then now. Big parts of former Yugoslawia, Ungary and Czeque were part of their empire and as the German states united as a common state the first time, they had the problem, that the Austrian state was settled only partly with Germans, so they decided to live just in friendly relationship with the Germans in Austria-Hungary. That is also the reason, why they fought together in WWI. After first World War Austria-Hungary got splitted into many parts from the winners. Austria and Ungary weren't allowed to reunite and Czecho-Slowakia and Yugoslawia were found. Only Austria in its actually borders, where nearly only German people live and lived at this time was left of former Austro-Hungary. The people which lived there were proud Germans and mainly happy to be 'alone with their people' now. Big parts of industry now laid abroad too, so they wanted to be part of Germany now, but the governments of the winners of war said 'no'. Later under Hitler Austria joined Germany (voluntary they voted) and after WWII they also weren't allowed and they were really ashamed of the cruels of the nazi regime, so they tried to differenciate from Germany, because everybody associated Germany with the nazis. Now I ask you, if Westfalia or Baden Wuerttemberg were divided from Germany, weren't the people there Germans? If the same thing after war happened with the GDR, weren't they Germans any more? What does it matter how long you are divided or what you say you are? If I would say, that I were no human, am I then an elephant?
