Love his sound. Flute players here: can you get this sound from a cheap flute?

  2. Jorge Martín

Look!!! What will happen if in the music conservatory they give you that freedom to play what you like what you want what you feel..... im glad i scaped from that cage years ago....and i always will be a free flute player.....too. im not tied to a sheet of paper...or only under the permitted or accepted ways of playing...though i play with a beautiful clean tone too. If you could reach that...you are free then to play anyway....anywhere.

Very special indirect occurrence involving Mr. Lateef. I had ordered his 'Improvising Soul' method book years ago. Once ordering the book, at first, I excitedly waited for its arrival. No response for weeks...then months, until, finally, I had forgot about ordering it altogether. Long story short, A YEAR PLUS LATER, I receive this Manila envelop package . I having NO idea what the envelop contained. To my surprise ( and delight), it was the method book by Brother Lateef I had ordered over a year previous. If that wasn't surprise enough, I was blown away that the package included a single dollar bill and a short note from Mr.Lateef. First, he apologized for getting the book to me so late, explaining -- at the time, he was in East Africa studying. In the note, he went on, mentioning that I had paid a dollar too much. Needless to say, I was blown away by this humble gesture of his.Unfortunately, I lost this treasure, along with my entire record collection when my parent's home was destroyed in the infamous, Hurricane Andrew in South Florida

One of the greatest Jazz Flautists ever

  17. Ice44 Miles

Was very fortunate to see this group at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco, Ca. in June 1974. Love Yusef's flute work here, shows his education and interest in Eastern music, almost sounds Egyptian....Kenny B's piano work so smooth and complementary, as is rhythm section. Did compliment Tootie Heath in restroom during set break...haha..Keystone was a unique place, very small and intimate. Perfect venue for jazz. Check out book Keystone Korner: Portrait of a Jazz Club.

WOW ! kind of meditation what a bless. RIP Yusef..

  26. Laurent THENARD

Masterpiece! it seems Debussy inspired many jazzmen. Yusef is an actual Mozart of the 20th century. The number of music pieces he wrote is incredible and of so many different styles. He composed for symphony orchestra, chamber music as well and even dodecaphonic pieces. He played jazz also from bop to modern world music. He is definetely the kind of person whose life has made our world a better place to live in! A mistic musician! Thanks Yousef and thanks for posting.

    uvisniblue

... ok, please !!! thanks for the interesting post !!!Wish you all the best !!!

    Eggy Noggy

Actually, I think most of our earlier jazzmen were classically-trained musicians. Eric Dolphy was a orchestra-grade bass clarinettist, but could not get work due to fact that orchestras were not into hiring black musicians. When you take things like this into consideration, Jazz had to happen just so those black Bachs, beethovens, mozarts could get recognized.

    vova47

I love Yusef but NOBODY but Mozart is "actual" Mozart (whatever that means) for all the centuries. Your comment shows how little you understand and appreciate genius like Mozart.

    Thanks.

  38. Bill Curry

When I was 20 in '76 I had the perfect pleasure to see him at the Lighthouse in LA. After the show, when the crowd had cleared, I could still hear him and the band. I followed the sound to their dressing room. I stayed and listened while they jammed, just on the other side of the door. It was magic.

One must be careful in love and hate. Time and words can't be recalled, even if it was only yesterday. Lovely Lateef track.

    Maravilloso.

  46. Josef Bonilla

  47. Josef Bonilla

    Me encanta!

  48. Ergin YILMAZ

    William Emmanuel Huddleston - YUSEF LATEEF - October 9, 1920-December 23, 2013 - R.I.P. Shared on G+ Oct 9, 2016

  54. likearc

haha, he starts with a variation of Debussy's Syrinx

    Alex Stetler

And that's where contemporary flute ended (?)

  55. fuddism

He does the "lip flex" like Julius Baker.

  56. KNW0001

    King Lateef, the bridge.

  57. KNW0001

    Who wrote this song?

    Marco Bertoli

    Jerome Kern.

  58. Rottinghere

Yet another example of Lateef's genius. A true artist in every respect.

  59. Theflowoflove

What a privilege to witness this. Wow

  60. XaviMackDaddy

    Absolutely beautiful

  61. philip gelb

Not many sax players pick up a flute and make every flute player listen in awe! :)

    Miguel Richey

+brandex2011 you also cant forget frank Wess or Eric eric dolphy

    emilianoturazzi

+brandex2011 Benny Carter could play saxophone and trumpet as well - Ornette Coleman, too, but his trumpet playing was a bit unhortodox

    Howard Mao

Well, so was his saxophone playing.

    PabluchoViision

You're right about that. Yusef was a man apart, a visionary... there was something saintly about him, in the most modest way imaginable.About tenor men who knew their way around the flute, and then some, don't forget Rahsaan Roland Kirk!

    Foto Favoloso

The Best sax/flute doubler IMHO was Joe Farrel.........there was no compromise on either instrument.

  62. Augusto Pacheco

what more can we ask more after this beauty?

  63. Nat Images

    Marvelous,meeting of art ,genious!

  64. Jay Schwartz

  72. Lucas Madeira

What is the nam of that song ?,

    JumpDiffusion

+jazzflutist "Yesterdays" is a song composed by Jerome Kern which became a jazz standard. It does not include the Syrinx quote :)

    Hermann Otto

Yesterdays, check out JJJohnson at the opera house

    vova47

Song?....... Funny, I don't hear anybody singing.

  73. Zeit Geist

This is disarmingly beautiful. Those ascending notes which are the hallmark of this song, gain a premonitory feel at the hands of Mr. Lateef.

  74. persianlover2

the begening sounds like Debussy sea.
