I love this peace of music, today its my 86 th birthday, time goes by so fast. I used to play this song over and over, my days are counted, i thank my son and my wife for the great years. He is under-known and those of us that revere him and his works should never use the terms unrated and/or underestimated as I/we frankly don’t care what others think about his musical abilities...skills, as Brother Yusuf’s musical acumen is beyond reproach. When we use the terms underrated and/or underestimates those terms are reiterated ad infinitum and only reinforce the negativity and the absurdity. Baba grew to detested the term jazz, as it had nothing to do with his work. Bird, Ellington, Mingus, Lester Bowie, AACM and countless others rebuke the term because of its negativity, its ambiguity, its marginalizing and corralling effects and connections. The musicians were not the ones that coined the term jazz, it was placed on the music to undermine it. Baba Yusef would eventually call his music "Autophysiopsychic Music." Baba is a remarkable composer, musician, philosopher, poet, writer, visual artist, instrument maker, conceptualist, innovator, humanists and spirit-man!If you are not familiar with his vast works and contributions you should become acquainted as soon as possible, as you are missing some vital musical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and inspirational nutrition. I have been listening to Baba Yusef since I was a boy of about ten years old and his work never ceases to amaze and FILL-FULL. Listen and you will learn a lot!

I bought the album in 66 and had it sent to the Canal Zone when I was with USAF. All the younger guys in the barracks were into psychadelic but when they heard this, they were blown away. The whole album is a treat but this is a beauty. A touch of Islam, maybe? Detroit men: Yusef, Barry Harris.

Detroit had a lot of wonderful jazz greats. The city wasn't just blessed with Motown.

I was given this amazing album as a birthday gift a long while back. Now I'd heard of Yusef at that point but was I had at best a casual interest. The guy who bought me this record was in fact an ex brother-in-law, of sorts. The man for his own sad and narrow-minded reasons did NOT like me. The only reason for his hate? He was black and a racist, added to the fact he was a legit sociopath (diagnosed clinically whilst in prison it would later turn out!) So to sum him up; a violent and abusive alcoholic, who openly blamed white people for every one of his problems, yet had knocked up a white girl, thus having a son whom he resented and of course abused heavily until child services intervened finally..Anyway, his intention on giving me this album was believe it or not SPITE! He honestly thought that I'd not like this album because from his perspective it was "boring old music for n****s", classy guy right? However, I quickly let him know I thought it was one of THE best records I'd ever had the pleasure of hearing and sincerely thanked him for the gift! So in a screwy way! , a wife-beating sociopath narcissist introduced me to the immortal Yusef Lateef ! So in conclusion, Fuck you for beating my sister-in-law as well as your own infant son, fuck you for perpetuating racism in not only your hatred of all whites but also in your insisting on acting like a gangbanger criminal thug and continuing an ugly legacy of hate and intolerance, but also Thank You for inadvertently broadening my musical horizons and inspiring a lifelong passion for ALL music, regardless of color, creed and culture etc.Sorry for the rant, thanks for your time to all who read it, this music makes me passionate goddammit!

Sometimes out of pain and insanity comes a glimmer of good . I recall the liner notes on John Coltrane's "Live at Birdland" where Amiri Baraka (then Leroi Jones) talked about how beauty and horror co-exist in American society, perhaps just like the Yin and Yang exist to balance one another and to give us hope.I remember as a child hearing Dr. King asking people to love their enemies. I couldn't understand what he meant when I was a child and an adolescent, but as I have gotten older I've begun to understand what he was trying to convey.Sometimes we have to let craziness go so that we can see beauty again. Let's allow beauty to prevail. I think that's Lateef's message in this and other compositions.
