After a rough start to the "Help!" recording session due to breaking a string on his 12 string guitar, John delivers a solid rhythm performances. He transitions to the G chord in the intro slightly early (0:02) playing the high notes before introducing the full chord on the correct beat. The first slap at 0:07 is played on the strings while the rest are played on the body. Except for the very final descending lick section at 2:07, all other slapping sections are played fully on the guitar's body. During the verses, John often plays his A chords accented with Asus2 chords, providing a nice melodic movement underneath his strumming. The G chord at 0:18 is played with two powerful strums while the one at 0:28 is played with more strums. Notice the complete cutoff of sound at 0:19. The C#m chord at 0:23 is played with an open high E string, or else the usual G# note is not heard audibly on record. John plays some funky strums on the G chord at 0:38 featuring more upstrokes (note shown). During the second verse, he transitions to the G chord at 0:58 half a beat early, same as for the one at 1:08. Starting the with E7 chord at 1:21, John interjects the open strings occasionally. This is the same for the E7 chord in the last chorus at 2:02.For the "breakdown" section, John lightens up on his strumming, but doesn't lose the driving intensity. During the A chords (1:30), he accents the high E string, while during the C#m chords (1:33), he alternates between the high E and B strings. On the F#m chords (1:35), he first alternates between the E and G strings, then accents both the E and B strings together. He does this consistently both times through the chord progression. Notice the accent on the G chord at 1:39. The song ends with a reprise to the F#m chord, where the overdubbed Gretsch plays an F# power chord and John's strumming loses a little time (2:09). The final note sees John playing a partial A chord and George's overdubbed part playing a single A. All guitars in the original recording are panned right. In my video, for ease of listening, the 12 string is panned center, the base track Gretsch is panned right, and the overdubbed Gretsch is panned left.

You got it right with the acoustic guitar playing , just needed to have been a 12 string with very light strings. Doubled up thin strings on the low E and A. Then you will completely nail it.
