"Next time I start to hobo'inI'm gonna have my baby by my side"No you're not. If you're a hobo, you ain't got no baby, and you ain't gonna have no baby, dream as you might. Incredibly, terribly, heartbreakingly sad.

  52. willieluncheonette

LAST POST REMEMBERING THE GREAT JOHN LEE HOOKER ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH ON AUGUST 22, 1917. What a wonderful surprise for me today. I just found this video while searching for John Lee songs to post. I had no idea such early film of him existed. In this live clip he sings a song we previously heard, Hobo Blues, but changes some of the words. What a talent he was and I can see why the women loved him.

    supermabel1

This was filmed in Germany in 1965. There's also earlier film of him at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival (he was backed by the Muddy Waters band!) on youtube, f'rinstance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf0kkkuYtyg ... I think that might be his earliest appearance on film. Muddy borrowed Johnnie's guitar for the sleeve photo on his 'At Newport' LP.

  53. Marcondes Oliveira

    maravilha...

  54. Gabriel Bendinelli

Higher guitar... Powerful man. 1:38 Tearful lines from devil guitars.

  55. Les Wilds SCVMC

Pure hard blues.. nothing artificial, nothing added. just REAL BADASS BLUES

  56. Peter Emmert

This must be the first time that John Lee went back to his original Modern Records/RPM Records sound while he was still signed with Vee-Jay in the early 1960s.

  57. Jason Pendleton

    Lord knows he's traveling

  58. Kaka FPS

    Sensacional !!!

  59. brandon willis

the emotions in his eyes are overwhelming towards the middle portion.

  60. Fluffy

    This is absolutely perfect

  61. Dane Hart

    human perfection

  62. Slade Mangrum

This is the man who got me into blues!

  63. Michel Krause

    excelent!

  64. Michael Bulls

    Dees is vuil

  65. T Doyle

This for me is the best blues performance I've ever seen. Every note, the way his eyes roll up in his head when he's trancing on the riff, I cry every time.

  66. banjerbritches

oh what i wouldnt give to hop a few freights with the blues greats...

  67. packetcreeper

    Simply amazing.

  68. Dan Jones

This may seem off topic... how the fuck can anybody be racist or discriminate if they access to all this music?

    not you I'm me

+Dan Jones African African made good music happen

    mycolortv1

not you I'm me, correction Black Americans made good music happen

    dead channel

Dan Jones : Most of the people on John's band were white. Even John himself said, "The blues is not black music, it's human music. We all feel the blues; we all suffer."

    Brian Hackert

question for the ages, my friend

    Dennis York

Cuz there’s lots of stupid blind bigots in the world who wouldn’t accept a new heart from a man like JLH.

  69. Strictly Original Materials

Any other guys comparable to him?

    not you I'm me

Robert Johnson muddy waters howling wolf

    Eric Fredericks

I Love Black People too <3

  71. Joe Johnson

no one sings like this guy...I think Bonnie Raitt said that there's nothing sexier than his voice in that grove...well as a dude, maybe not how I'd describe it, but it is elemental, for sure

  72. Jonas Josias

Blues é sentimento isso é Blues!

  73. Kevin James

I left a comment 2 yrs ago!!! 99 views? This is the most incredible blues performance I've ever seen, so deep and mesmerising! JLH had a huge impact on Hendrix !

    T Doyle

Kevin James word- best performance ever.

  74. jerusa garcia

    Ai, como eu amo isso!!!

  75. Elijah Tucker

He looks like he killed a man before.

  76. why not

    so powerful

  77. PorkFrog

too cool...JLH is one of them guys whose voice is so distinct it is impossible to confuse him with anyone else..just unique...the style of music is not entirely unique, but he also gives it something a little different....but that voice, man, that voice

    sneekman

+PorkFrog I'd argue his style of playing the guitar is pretty unique as well. He has a small collection of licks that I'd attribute to his personal playing style. Blues may be a fairly formulaic art-form, but I can quickly pick up on his playing style upon hearing it.

    PorkFrog

+sneekman well I read that he did odd things with tempo and didn't 'play well with others'-or others didn't play well with him, however you like to look at it. Supposedly had a free-form lyrical style. which developed from making lyrics up on the fly. Also read that he was taught by a guy who played 'hill country blues' or a droning, one chord type sound. I only know what half that means, just stuff I read...in fact, I've heard 'La Grange' by ZZTop for decades and just the other day said 'Hey, that's a John Lee Hooker riff or a very close facsimile'What is werid is the effect of droning type blues like JLH played...repetition should get old, but it's like the repetition allows you to go deeper in somehow, with a song like 'Boogie Chillun' for example, moreso than this one. JLH also means trills, trills and more trills...I like the dramatic effect of the Hubert Sumlin-like short bursts or flurries too

    Dennis York

PorkFrog He played only one chord a lot of the time. Of course, somebody with the gift JLH had wouldn’t need more than one chord!

  78. Jarred Shep

What are the 11 dislikes for? For just being a part of disliking? Cmon.

    Larry DuVall

    probably ignorant

  79. Kevin Zavala

the blues still lives , country has died , the only two true american sounds

    WhateverItTakes

+Kevin Zavala Jazz is still alive. Rock is an American sound even though the British player a huge role as well. Rap is still alive and there is some good rap, check out rage against the machine or Public enemy for some oldie but goodies. American music is still going strong. Idk about Nashville country.

  80. Joe Mcgovern

I love this it must be the most captivating performance by John Lee Hooker I have ever seen it is featured on a DVD set that I have had for years when I first watched it put it this way I still have the same reaction now that I did then

    Dennis York

Joe Mcgovern “Forboding” comes to mind...

  81. Jay Bee Rodriguez

I see people keep on taking the Blues as excuse to do more free/unnecessary promotion of his rock heroes. Please, forget those "roots and fruits" and just enjoy a master musician with his very own S-T-Y-L-E! Period.

  82. ケイタ

Some people think he is just a boogiec boom-boom man, but he is quite more than that...

  83. Metal Guy

11 don't like it... just a bunch of fucking racist. Fuck KKK ! I'm the thousandth to like this video and i'm from quebec :) Peace to everyone :D \m/

  84. Blues Fan

    Excellent

  85. John Shackelford

Mississippi Delta Blues performed by the master from the delta, John Lee Hooker!

  86. WenzTout

  87. ew1usnr

That is fantastic. Both the guitar and the voice.

  88. Joan Gonzalvez

Tuning is Open A for those wondering. You can go Open G and capo 2nd fret and get the same sound

    republiquita

    +Joan Gonzalvez THANK YOU!

    Astro Gremlin

True. You can go open G and capo any fret to get open tuning for any chord.

    Skeptic Chic

Germans love the blues. Some of my favorites videos are from American blues artists playing in Germany.

  93. Joel Z. Williams

@ 1:30  , His mama knows that allowing him to ride the train will eventually mean that "her son is gone" that is so sad and extremely poignant moment for them both I wonder if he waved to her?

    John Doe

+Joel Z. Williams Like to let son go in the army. Military hobo. In fench we say " baroudeur"

    Miglior Store

@kabo Rnat So did I, kabo. So did I.

  95. Joel Z. Williams

The song is from 1948, although I'm not sure when this was recorded for TV. Just wanted to give all of the fans of The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC a reminder who started it all.

    Heroes Ascent

@Joel Z. Williams Oh yeah! and so many others :)
