Gorillaz is Gorillaz. They have no distinct sound or genre. Anything they release is them. Gorillaz is a band for making music with different artists for multiple reasons. 1. To get you interested into that artist, 2. To get the listener into different music styles/genres, and 3. To make dope music. I love Gorillaz and appreciate every song they’ve made. Humanz is weird. It had a huge gap between it and Plastic Beach, and spat in the face of Plastic Beach. Plastic Beach had videos that told an actual story, while Humanz had little to no story. Then The Nownow came out, and had barely any more story. It's pretty disappointing in that aspect, let alone the music. The Nownow did sound alright though.

I just think the character design is edgy, like typical cape/jacket for a hero, typical flying for a hero, typical beams coming from hands, and some typical fighting pose or stance that reminds me of dr.strange. I just don’t like the way it looks, the song is okay tho.

Damon Albarn suffers from the quintessential British mental illness: the White Man's Burden. He is not 'providing a stage for young minority artists' by allowing collaborations to take over recent Gorillaz albums, he is co-opting them. If Little Simz is worth listening to, she should stand on her own. And if you think the only way she could possibly be heard is if Damon Albarn swoops in like Superman to 'rescue her' from obscurity, you're probably suffering from White Man's Burden too. At least with earlier albums, the major collaborators had a purpose for being there - not just for one song, but across the whole album and phase. Del the Funky Homosapien basically WAS Phase 1, and the entire point of the overabundence of guest artists in Plastic Beach was that the location and the album was an accumulation of garbage - metaphorical and literal. When Snoop Dogg suddenly starts rapping in the middle of a bubbly pop ditty by Katy Perry, that is garbage. That is the music industry homogenizing pop, rock, rap, and electronica into a 'put whatever is popular into the mix' cycle of creative inbreeding, and perpetuating the celebrity image that Gorillaz was created to undermine. But perhaps that mission statement is a little too hard for Damon Albarn now, especially since he has to go help his gaggle of underappreciated friends become famous like he is. Gotta save the world, like the White God he imagines himself to be. He'll probably carry his own cross up to cavalry while he's at it, muttering about how he's doing it for our sake the whole way.Just let things take their natural course. If he wants to support Little Simz, he has every right to do it - outside of Gorillaz. Maybe it should be on Little Simz album, with Gorillaz/Albarn as the guest star. Not the other fucking way round.

adding on something as a Buddhist-Taoist: i interpreted this song to largely be about the financial decline and yes! political tensions for our generations (millennials and gen z) as something that we need to fight through. the laughing buddha or fat buddha has connotations of enlightenment and peace yes, but those are primarily associated with the actual Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) who founded buddhism. the laughing buddha is actually a taoist diety that is meant to bring wealth and prosperity. the flashing of the smiles and frowns to me could be used to symbolise the unstable economy with the growth of many new niche industries (Uber, Air bnb, amazon etc) and the industries that people keep claiming that millennials are killing. the use of the laughing buddha as a "final boss" to all these sufferings of an uncertain financial future, rising costs of living, wars and political turmoil in my opinion, is symbolising that capitalism and wealth distribution is the root of all these evils and sufferings, and that we must find liberation from capitalism and materialism. (tbh i also feel like its kinda sacrilegious but westerners be westerners)
