I saw him in 1978 at the Berklee Performance Center. I was a student there and my work study job was the Friends Lounge as a bartender. He came in before the show, was quiet and cool. Did not ask for anything. Then nailed the gig. Deep tone. Cool player.

The mellow sound of the sax is so relaxing!!! I love it! Truly a classic!

The tone quality and intonation at 6:42-9:36 is just absolutely phenomenal!

I saw Dexter Gordon at Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit many years ago.  He was fabulous!

+CoyLady DDL i was speaking with friends just this evening about Baker's...fantastic venue...i saw Mr. Gordon at Gilly's jazz club in Dayton, Ohio...probably right around the same time he played Detroit...

@Kevin Mauch What delightful conversation that much have been!  Bakers was a great venue and I  saw some incredible talent there. Loved that Dex held up his sax like a trophy after he finished each piece  in the set.  These are wonderful memories to cherish, whether in Detroit or Dayton.  Thanks for writing.  :)

It is NOT better, it is DIFFERENT, an instrumental, not a vocal presentation. You can't compare them.

When Freddie Hubbard comes in on Trumpet. Holy Moly it sends a chill down my spine. brilliant!!

It's one of the best solos by Hubbard ever captured on record. This whole performance is sublime. When I want to tell someone why Dexter Gordon was special, I play this track. Listen and weep.

I always thought it was Chet Baker on the trumpet. Thanks for clearing that up :) In top three of such solos..

the point is, Dexter played it much better. It is a shame when a record company releases a bad recording many tears later after the artist is dead to make a buck.

The red lipstick gave her the appearance of one of those Geisha girls I'd seen on TV. I couldn't tell whether it was the rain or her tears causing the two black streaks of mascara down her porcelain cheeks. The latter seemed an impossible thought. How could something so beautiful be anything but happy?

Horrible album, never should have been released. In the liner notes is a letter Dexter wrote to the producer apologizing for beong "sock" during the recording date.

Daaaaamn. I had this album back in the early 80's. I know it was released before then, but a neighbor had it, an once i heard it I had to get the wax. Unfortunately it, along with hundreds of others, was lost in my roommates eviction. Dexter was a baaaaad man.

I think this is my new favorite sax player. It doesn't matter what he's playing, he pours his soul into every note. I prefer this over the players that just swallow notes as fast as possible without chewing first.

I enjoy every single note from his sax. My soul has a pocket just for him.

The tone Hubbard creates from 3:21 onwards reaches you straight to the bones. Pure excellence...

@sabsaka Actually every single famous saxophone player is good at ballades... Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Illinois Jacquet... They are all wonderful at ballades.

In 1974 a friend asked me if I ever heard Dexter Gordon play sax. He told me he was a major player. I'd heard bird, Hawk, Prez, and a lot other's. I was sure there wasn't left anyone else worth really listening to. Then I heard Dexter. My life has been richer. Thank God for good friends.
