Great 'modern jazz'-meets-'bop', perhaps the first 'post-bop', lol, and made way out west. Leroy Vinnegar was the walkingest' bass-man around along with Ray Brown. Mr. Gordon is going for his 'bird sounds and high notes but his strength is his effortless phrasing like sonny rollins, his killer melodic licks, and his superb, propulsive, almost even-8s swing in the solo. great post. thanks! peace

Approx 10yrs later (1964) I saw/heard him in CPH (Copenhagen,Denmark) with Kenny Drew, NHØP,and Alex Riel, It was GREAT

Bird had the chops and Trane had the vision, but Dex always sounded the best IMO.

@Docnolan1953 Hey Doc this unbelievable.. Dexter introduces and then resolves some freaky whole-tone intervals - amazing. Again the embouchure..Dexter is a whole - perhaps the whole - new thing. He's not going to give you bent notes on that horn, cheek puffs, hurting vibrato, honks - he's only using that stuff sparingly if at all. As a result Dexter becomes the most wailing of all jazz men. For melody-statement, then replacement, phrased against rhythm - he's the top. regards
