I guess it's the fact that i don't listen to metal, but i think the drums on this album sound a thousand times better than the guitar on earlier Metallica albums.

Unpopular opinion: St Anger it's my favourite album because of the thrashy sound of the guitars and the aggressive sound of the drums that are my favourite drums of all the Metallica albums, and it's my favourite too because of the emotional vocals of James on that album, hear any of the songs and James on all its so fucking emotionalThat's all :.3

When you watch Some Kind Of Monster movie this album makes sense. This album describes the pain and hell and feelings that James had over the years same as the band members. I still don't understand why people hate this album even if its because of 'trash can'and no solos its still a great album and I appreciate it after all these years

They should do this album again some good stuff on here, but the snare sound is the spoiler.One of their heaviest albums, sounds like it was rushed out but it has a raw feel.As soon as people complained about it I kind of saw what they meant, but liked it at first thought it to be a return to their original sound.Yeah but the snare, yeah I get it now !

Personally I think this album can be described as Lars’s ego trip because this album feels much more drum oriented than there other albums that also helps explain the snare sound, basically Lars wanted his drums to stick out like a sore thumb in order to get more attention because from what I’ve heard Lars always wanted to be on top and he’d do anything to be on top and I don’t think he cared whether the album got positive or negative attention he just wanted it to get attention and most importantly he wanted attention and as you can see in this comment section or any other st anger video it worked, also for anyone who says if Newstead stayed in the band he could’ve stoped it, that is a very unlikely scenario I mean he could’ve somehow managed to convince Lars not to but after cliffs death Lars basically became leader of the band so had Newstead tried to stop him it’s more likely he would’ve either been ignored or fired the first one is more likely since Newstead had zero direction in the band and was told to stick to bass lines so had Newstead not quit the only thing that would be different would be the bass lines the bass tone and just the overall audibility of the bass, now I won’t say my person stance on the quality of the album but that’s just my opinion.

Also sorry if there are any grammar issues or any weird parts in this I literally just got done donating blood so I’m feeling kind of lightheaded.

Hot take: the shrill tone of the snare helps it cut through the filthy wall of sound that all the other instruments produce, akin to cymbals and the more nasal tone rock vocalists tend to adopt. And sure, mixing the whole album differently could have lessened the problem of muddiness, but it also would have killed some of the angry feeling the album has. I've listened to the cleaner redone versions of St. Anger. With the cleaning, they became sanitized, losing their intensity and rawness - the spirit of the album. A gentle tantrum isn't a tantrum. The snare tone was a good choice in the context of the other engineering choices for the sake of art over mechanical/tonal perfection. If you want the latter, that's what classical music is all about.Original St. Anger is a noisy and unapologetic masterpiece.

It's an awesome feeling when you listen to an album you've first listened to when you were 12 or 13, and after almost 17 or so years you suddenly see it in a whole new light and finally understand it. Fuck, how it resonates.

I know that almost every Metallica fan is disappointed with the snare, but I don't think it would've sounded better with another snare sound. I mean, would you imagine just a few seconds if there was the Master of Puppets snare on this album ? It would just sound like the worst album ever written. So stop messing up with the snare of the St. Anger album and deal with it.

If you think this is a good album, you're objectively wrong. But it is interesting to try to understand how these same guys wrote master of puppets and Justice for all etc.

Confused with people had said this worst album of metallica, i metalhead, grindcore metal big fan, very respect of this album, didn't find whats the mistakes,, still play thrash metal with a little hardcore. Be honest, this album still better than load, reload that all have liked, almost similer with the new one. They didn't remove all trash metal riffs, maybe just melody but overall good for me

I actually really like the song St. Anger the way they do it live (with a normal snare) mostly because when the vocals come in it has a very good groove, in my opinion, pretty mellow on the rest of the album

Конечно, он может звучать не так приятно как ждёшь от металлики, и он несколько странный, но в этом и дело !!!!Это ведь последний альбом металлики как активной группы, а не как легенды. Магнетик и Хардвайрд - это ж по сути пенсионерские альбомы, они не пытались в них никого удивить, не пытались найти ранее не слышанное звучание, это ретроспективные альбомы, альбомы имени себя. St. Anger же напротив выполнен в духе времени, то есть в духе волны альтернативы начала нулевых, при том он не косит не под SOAD, не под других важных птиц альтернативы, он ошеломляет своей топорностью и жёсткостью звучания... Да, возможно для слуха это перебор местами, но это дейсвительно оригинальная музыка . Альбом в котором металлика продолжала развиваться и исследовать металл.
