I think he just literally was referring to the state of millennials. This is literally why millennials will make anything that resembles anything remotely real catch on like fire regardless of what feeling it conjures. They've experienced numbness for so long they'll feel anything if it'll remind them how to feel so they can turn it into something positive. They just needed to remember how. He did it pretty spot on too.

i think we should stop trying to figure out what a song means, and focus on what you yourself think it means. how do you interpret it? what do the lyrics mean to you. to me its about me and my sister smoking because of our mental problems, i because i want to feel, her because she doesnt. it could mean anything, all you have to do is find that out by listening. what you hear will be how YOU hear it, and thats what it means.

I think it speaks or brings together the two meanings, that of drugs and that of the myth of the cavena, because we can see that in many occasions it refers to escaping from that reality, to wanting to flee, and to be consicent of them, to be asleep in a state literally sedated, we can see that habal of a couple, and at that time was related to drugs worse also with the cave because that part of escaping is not wanting to see reality be afraid of this and that is why we take refuge in the caveran, or in drugs, and as we do not like it so much we can not leave it.we also see that there is a moment when he tells his partner not to join, that is to say that he does not do it because he is supposed to save him, she is the one who must get it out of all that,

I think this song os about a drug. but not in the traditional scence. The drug is loves a fresh and new love, and more to the point sex, hearts beating fast sucked into the moment, complete distraction from the world of hate outside. love is a poison that never stung. fresh new love. free and toung and we can feel none of it, completely free together, no world outside. shadows on walls of the cave, silhouettes of themselves. total escapism in eachother. and when he's telling her not to join in he's telling her to distract him from the pain of the world. To me ultimate distraction is being completely sucked into the bubble that you share with the love of your life. the feeling that nothing else and no-one else matters when the crap hits the fan.

It's been shoved down our throats so much our teeth and gums are lined with the scum of it. That's the way I took it anyway. Isn't that what makes a song good? One that makes you feel something?

Only one person own this soundtrack - something of which he should be immensely proud.... to create something (this and a number of other tracks) that cut through to the marrow yet somehow retain a sense of optimism... i saw him in Cardiff - to see someone give of their talents so freely and utterly devoid of ego - it still makes me smile.... it does make me wonder what the '14' listen to and what kindnesses they recently extended without personal gain - thankyou 'Hozier'

Guys, I don't think this song isn't about drugs. It is about Plato's "The Cave" and the distractions of society. We are sitting in a cave content to watch the the shadows of the outside world on the walls of the cave. The shadows can create fear because we don't know what they are, so we retreat to safety and become sedated. If you want to make it about drug, that is cool too. Art is open to interpretation, so do what you want, but I feel like he is saying society is LIKE a drug that keeps us safe and ignorant.
