Mister Davis I took six hits of acid and everything seems blue. Miles Davis: SO WHAT.

1:31 ...and Miles said, "Let there be groove..."

  4. Blackholle

To me, this song says so much with no words at all. It’s like the saxophone is talking to me. It’s telling me to stop worrying about everything unimportant, so what if you mess up or fail, just go out and enjoy life while it lasts.

Coltrane wails and the bass plays one of the all time riffs but there is something about what Miles does with his trumpet here that defies description, other than to say it is sublime. I can think of few other pieces in the pantheon of music that can compare to the aesthetic of this track. Oh yeah killer intro by Bill Evans btw.

  10. Dylan Gatenby

Great song. Miles was a genius of jazz trumpet. Kind of Blue was the first Miles album I ever owned.

I've listened to this album hundreds of times now and only just fully realizing how truly drawn I am to Cannonball's work on these sessions. Anybody have some quintessential work of his to recommend?

  25. Ethan Fanshel

I guess if we could only pick one tune to epitomize modern instrumental jazz, I would pick this. It just feels so right, like the music played itself. Mindful jazz.

  26. Victor Bujase

Never get tired of listening 2 Los Maestros, The Masters. There's no other John Coltrane today or, Miles or , anyone of those Master's.

This musical Jazz heaven, sublime, you can't help it but marvel at the luxurious basslines & gentle piano chords on this hauntingly magnificent touch of modal Jazz, the genius that is Miles Davis in his trumpestious pomp, ably assisted by a great cast such the legendary John Coltrane

Apparently the drummer thought he overplayed on that initial crash, but it definitely worked out! Love seeing and hearing mistakes that make a piece.

  45. Landon Mennemeyer

I'm not a huge jazz fan. But I could listen to this all day. It's simple and sophisticated. Relaxing and smooth. But full of life. Just love it.

    wicked good!!

  60. Nathaniel Kinsey

Jazz reminds me of my granny who grew up in St.Louis/Chicago during this era, and she and her brother brought me and my brothers on jazz. I knew jazz before I knew hip hop and I'm 26. Everybody calls me old or weird for listening to jazz, only if they knew the benefits of just letting a record play and letting all those notes just soak into you. Its therapeutic for me

  61. Khalil

Coltrane part makes an already special song a classic

  62. Rainy Van Rides with Luna

The double bass is fun to play on this song.

  63. Robert Polanco

I have to say that ever since I learned about the history of jazz in high school, I fell in love with that genre ever since. To me, jazz is very fascinating and even intoxicating as well.

  64. Joel Villarreal

Was this song in mo better blues?

  65. Love Willy

    1:28 - 3:30

  66. Faith Miles

    🧡🧡💛💛🧡

  67. HaliniSnow

Cannonball's solo is sublime, i'd say better than Trane's

  68. Rascal Rollins

This is music for COOL people. Who out there is COOL?

  69. TheChosenJuan

It kinda feels like nightlife in the city of New York, during those times, you know? I like it a lot.

  70. Ralph Boyd

It's not the Miles Davis killed Jazz, it's just that he didn't leave much in that Universe unexplored.

  71. Ed Dalce

What a conversation. Synergy of the 5 senses, levitating.

  72. kevin Rea

    Timeless. Faultless

Miles: What should my new song be called?(The fridge is making loud noises and then the phone rings.)Miles:Yes.Other person on the line: Do you need your fridge fixed?Miles: No.(Fridge makes a loud bang)Other person on teh line: Are you lyeing?Miles: Yeah.(Pause)Miles:So what?(He hangs up)AND SO WHAT WAS BORN!!!!

The great Bass was Paul Chambers, died too young. Please read the title as SO! What's next here is what I have done. It is a great conversation between two musicians.

  81. Jazziz Café

Amazing tune! Love it! Thanks for share it! #ClassicMonday #Jazz

  83. Tarus Prentice

The intro to this song will never ever be duplicated. This album is pure class

  84. Craig Kimpel

I love Jimmy Cobbs extra loud symbol crash around 1:32, right after the head, just as Miles starts his solo. Jimmy said in an interview that was a mistake at the time, but when he listened to the playback, it sets up the transition from very mellow to slight dissonance perfectly, so it turned out great. Sometimes the unconscious is better than the conscience.

  85. Joseluis Serrato

    Music too my ear hairs

  91. Paul and Friends

I came to jazz very late, hopefully not too late and Miles Davis So What is the very 1st tune I started then loved it right from 1st sec, inspired my latter playing and composing so much, recently I even make pc of music base on inspiration of this song (but the arrangement isn't exactly in jazz style) ru-clip.net/video/PZ66D6A7fOU/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE.htmlAnyway I always looking chances of crossover to worldwide musicians who play/sing and we make some music together just with a home interface plus DAW, for me it's just the funniest thing in life! So if you also have interest welcome contact me ( [email protected] ) anytime.

  92. Brent Martinez

The red light begins to flash and at that moment Miles and the guys set down their egos and pick up their instruments, for beyond the confines of that New York City studio nobody or nothing else exists. It was no longer 1959, as time also had become a structured tomfoolery alien to the Jazz mind. Through the dim lights and lingering cigarette smoke, Evans, in front, toys with the piano as does a child in a music store, devoid and empty, not knowing where his fingers were planning to go, rather embarking on a journey split between form and spontaneity. Chambers and Cobb jump in now with a little more rhythm as the three men begin a dance of seeming contradiction in this musical give-and-take, observing and divorce from knowing. Chambers puts his finger on a cadence, as each note of his bass pumps more life into this growing thing not definable by words. Now the feet begin to tap, as what was once a defunct lump of noise is now living, breathing, and changing while simultaneously etching itself into the very fibers of the room. A crash of the symbol playfully invites Miles into the posse of entangled men. His notes play chase with the piano and drums, jumping on and off, going in between and around them like kiddies on a playground. Miles Davis has now become an empty name, like an old abandoned house, he has transcended his name and become the music that he breathes in and out. Without hesitation Coltrane gets on it, running the changes as a river rushes forward with no concern for what was or what will be. “Free Jazz” spirit fills the room, and as that recorder tape spins over and over, even it begins to think to itself “Maaan, I really dig Coltrane’s chops”. A dance of truly massive proportions, as the men continue to bounce off each other their Satori concludes itself . After the recorder clicks, the red light dies along with the music and Miles and the gang join their bodies once again.

I'm pretty sure I heard the lick in here somewhere

That genius entrance with the hit on the ride cymbal at 1:30 always reminds me when in the summer i jump in the water, let the momentum keep me underwater, release my muscles, slowly drifting upwards, don't move and let the bubbles run towards the surface around me and just listen to the underwater sounds
