Not every darbuka is made out of metal. Many people prefer the ceramic darbuka because it sounds warmer and can create more tones, better for split-finger. Remo makes its darbuka out of wood-composite material and it actually sounds pretty genuine. Hubb Percussion makes a darbuka out of solid wood.

I think every darbuka/doumbek is made from metal. Some of them just have an additional vinyl or wood cover. Otherwise you wouldn't have that crispy sound ;)
